The Physicians of the Pain Specialists of Greater
Chicago
Scott E. Glaser, M.D., DABIPP
Dr. Glaser received his undergraduate degree from the University of Notre Dame and his Medical Doctorate from Indiana University School of Medicine. He completed his Anesthesia residency and fellowship at Northwestern University Medical School in Chicago. He has been treating pain in the private practice setting since 1990.
Dr. Glaser was elected by his fellow specialists to serve as a director on the national board of the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians (ASIPP) in 2007. He was re-elected to this prestigious post in 2009. Prior to his election to the national board, Dr. Glaser was elected and served two terms as the President of the Illinois Society of Interventional Pain Physicians (ISIPP), a subchapter of ASIPP. He has also served two terms as the Vice President of ISIPP.
Dr. Glaser became a diplomate of the American Board of Interventional Pain Physicians (ABIPP) the first year it was offered. This is acknowledged to be the highest level of credentialing for the field of interventional pain management. In 2010, he was selected as an examiner for ABIPP. He is also a Fellow of Interventional Pain Practice, a certification given by the World Institute of Pain. Dr. Glaser has also been re-certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology in the sub-specialty of pain management.
Dr. Glaser was one of the first Instructors selected by the International Spinal Intervention Society (ISIS). ISIS was the first society to provide training by experts in the performance of spinal injections. He is now an Instructor for ASIPP, the society that has eclipsed ISIS as the leading organization representing the field of interventional pain management and promoting excellence in this field. As an instructor, he teaches other physicians minimally invasive spinal procedures on cadavers at national courses. He also presents continuing medical education lectures at ASIPP meetings.
Dr. Glaser was heavily involved in the lobbying efforts required to ensure passage of the NASPER bill. This bill was written by the founder of ASIPP, Dr. Lax Manchikanti, and is instrumental in fighting prescription drug abuse while maintaining access to appropriate care. Dr. Glaser and Dr. Goodman presented this vital legislation to Senator Richard Durbin who co-sponsored it in the Senate and it was signed into law in 2005.
Dr. Glaser continues to work closely with the Illinois Department of Health and the chief pharmacist to implement this program in Illinois after the governor signed it into law in 2008. He has been appointed to the IL Prescription Monitoring Advisory Committee to accomplish this goal. He also speaks to multiple physician groups and other health providers about the risks of diversion and abuse of controlled substances as well as the benefits of prescribing opioid medications for the treatment of chronic pain.
Dr. Glaser has served as an advisor to multiple pharmaceutical companies and medical equipment companies but has recently limited these activities secondary to his board position. He also speaks to multiple physician groups and other health providers about the significant risks as well as the benefits of prescribing opioid medications for the treatment of chronic pain. He has been interviewed on TV, radio, and in print on many subjects pertaining to pain and its treatment.
Dr. Glaser has co-authored multiple articles in the leading interventional pain management journal, "Pain". They include systematic reviews, guidelines, a perspective review, and a case report. Much of his work has been devoted to changing the current standard of care for the performance of lumbar and thoracic transforaminal epidural steroid injections. His research has enlightened the pain community to the pathway of the vascular supply to the spinal cord around the vertebra and in the foramen. His sole goal is to reduce the risk of catastrophic neurologic complications secondary to spinal cord infarction following interventions that place the vasculature at risk.
